That restraint is why you plant it. A white edged leaf lifts a shaded corner in a way no burgundy cordyline can, and it sits beside dark leaved plants without fighting them for attention. The leaves sit in tidy rosettes on thin upright stems, and it does as well in a bright room indoors as in a warm, sheltered garden.

The pale margin holds up better than on many white edged cordylines, but it is still where stress shows: hot afternoon sun, cold wind or a pot that dried out leaves brown marks that stand out on a pale leaf far more than on a dark one.

Shade that is bright, not gloomy

Outdoors, give it morning sun and afternoon shade, or the high filtered light under palms, a pergola or a large tree. Winters have to be mild and frost free for it to live outdoors year round, as they are along the subtropical coast from the Tweed northwards. In Sydney and Perth it needs a warm, protected bed away from frost hollows, and further south keep it potted and bring it under cover from late autumn. The soil wants plenty of organic matter, good drainage and a thick mulch. Too much shade is the opposite mistake: in a dim corner the canes stretch, the rosettes open out and the plant looks thin rather than crisp, and the contrast in the leaf softens.

Keeping it crisp inside

Indoors, the brightest spot in the room is the right one, close to a north or east facing window but not pressed against hot glass in summer. Water once the mix feels dry a knuckle deep, and far less in winter, when soggy mix and cool rooms rot the roots. In heated rooms with dry air, two spotted mite causes a fine pale speckling and sometimes webbing under the leaves; rinsing the foliage in the shower every few weeks keeps it down. A weak liquid fertiliser once a month while it is actively growing is plenty, since heavy feeding gives soft, floppy leaves. If a cane throws leaves that are entirely green, cut it out at the base before it outgrows the variegated growth. Tall plants can be cut back in late spring and will shoot again below the cut. Cats in particular tend to chew indoor foliage, and this plant is toxic to them and to dogs, so put the pot on a stand or a sill out of reach.

Pairing it with the dark ti plants

New Conga is most effective as the light partner to a dark leaf. Planted in front of Cordyline fruticosa Negra, the near black and the cream sharpen each other, and the pair works as well in two matching pots by a door as in a bed. Beside the burgundy and pink striping of Firestorm Ti Plant it cools a hot scheme down.
