Mona Amethyst is a compact, soft stemmed shrubby perennial with quilted green leaves backed in purple, topped by upright spires of amethyst toned tubular flowers. Flowering is triggered by shortening days, so the show builds through autumn rather than in midsummer.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eGrow it in part to full shade with protection from hot afternoon sun, which bleaches and scorches the leaves. It is frost tender and the stems collapse in a hard freeze, though plants usually reshoot from the base in milder districts. Tip prune young plants two or three times to build a dense frame, because untouched plants go leggy and flop under the weight of their own flower spikes. Snails and mealybug are the pests worth watching for.
