Sugar Maple - Acer saccharum
Sugar maple asks for cool autumn nights, and that one requirement decides whether you get the colour you are paying for. In cold districts the leaves run through yellow and orange to deep scarlet. In a mild coastal garden the same tree often goes straight to dull brown and drops.
It is a slower, denser and more upright tree than the silver and red maples usually planted for quick shade, with five lobed leaves much larger and rounder than those of a Japanese maple, and grey bark that plates and furrows with age. Part shade or full sun both work. The roots want moderate but reliable summer moisture in soil that neither bakes nor waterlogs.
Two practical notes. It resents reflected heat and dry wind, so a hot western wall will scorch the leaf margins by midsummer. And while it makes a good courtyard feature in its early years, this is a full sized shade tree in the long run, so give the roots real room. Bare root stock lifts and plants during winter dormancy.
