Aiphanes horrida
There is nothing gentle about this palm. Aiphanes horrida, the ruffle or coyure palm, arms its trunk, leaf stalks and even the leaf ribs with long black spines, and the species name is a fair warning rather than botanical drama.
The payoff is the crown. Leaflets are wedge shaped and ragged at the tips, arranged in an irregular ruffled pattern quite unlike the smooth feather palms most people plant, and older specimens carry clusters of orange red fruit.
This is a genuinely tropical South American palm. It performs in the warm humid parts of Queensland and sulks anywhere with cold winters or dry wind, so treat it as a specialist choice rather than a general landscape palm. Give it rich moist soil, shade in the early years and shelter from wind. Never plant it beside a path, a driveway or an area where children play, and take on old frond removal with gloves, long sleeves and a plan. Supplied in 400mm.
