Shell Ginger - Alpinia mutica False Cardomom
Landscapers use this one where a shell ginger is wanted but there is not room for the full sized version. Alpinia mutica makes a narrower, more upright clump than the common variegated shell ginger, with glossy dark green blades on slim canes, and it holds a tidier outline in a bed instead of flopping outwards over the path.
Flowers are the shell shaped white blooms the genus is known for, marked yellow and red in the throat, and they are followed by orange to red seed capsules that hang on for weeks and are arguably the better feature. Crush a leaf and you get the cardamom scent behind the false cardamom name, although it is not the culinary spice.
It travels slowly on rhizomes, so give the clump room or cut back the edges every couple of years. Old canes that have already flowered can be taken out at ground level to keep the clump fresh. It wants moisture and shelter, and frost will burn the foliage.
