Two things decide whether a backyard apple ever crops properly: enough winter chill and a compatible pollination partner nearby. Assorted Malus domestica means grafted named varieties supplied as they come available, so read the label on the tree you receive before you plan the rest of the orchard. Apples are deciduous, bare through winter, and are best planted in the dormant season while the roots can settle. The rootstock rather than the variety sets eventual size, and trees on dwarfing stock need staking for life.
