Sandwort - Arenaria Summer Lemon
Gardeners who want a living mortar between pavers usually reach for a moss substitute and end up disappointed. Sandwort is the more forgiving option. Summer Lemon is grown for fine, needle-like foliage in a soft lime to yellow-green tone, forming a dense low cushion that hugs the ground and stays neat without mowing or edging.
Small white flowers appear over the mat in the warmer half of the year and sit right down among the leaves. Use it in gravel gardens, trough and pot plantings, rockery pockets, beside step treads and as a green edge to a path.
Two things kill it. The first is poor drainage, particularly a humid summer with the crown staying damp, which turns the middle of the cushion brown and mushy. The second is scorching afternoon sun inland, which bleaches the foliage out. Morning light with shade later in the day gives the best leaf colour. It takes the occasional footstep but is not a lawn replacement. Do not confuse it with Irish moss or Scleranthus, which want different care.
