Astelia Silver Spear TM
Unlike the New Zealand flaxes it usually shares a bench with, Astelia is a soft plant. The arching, sword-shaped leaves are thin, flexible and coated in fine silvery scales that catch low light, so a settled clump reads as a pale metallic fountain rather than a stiff upright fan. That colour is the entire reason to use it, and it stays strongest in bright light with shelter from harsh afternoon sun.
The two things that undo it are heat and stale moisture. Leaf tips scorch and go papery in hot, dry inland positions, while in humid summer areas the centre of the clump can rot if it sits in a poorly drained bed or under constant irrigation. Give it open, free-draining soil, morning sun or dappled shade, and a mulch that does not pack down hard against the crown.
It suits courtyard pots, coastal beds and shaded planter boxes, and it lifts dark foliage such as mondo grass where a hard silver contrast is wanted.

This plant is available in 2 sizes, from 140mm up to 170mm, priced from $16.95 to $21.95 per plant. The size shown is the pot the plant arrives in, which is the rootball, not the height of the plant.
