Jointed Twig Rush - Baumea articulata
Wetland contractors reach for jointed twig rush when a pond edge needs height without a fussy plant to maintain. Baumea articulata sends up tall, round, hollow green stems divided internally into segments, hence the name, with no obvious leaf blade and brown flowering spikelets near the tip. The effect is vertical and clean.
It grows with its base in shallow standing water and sits happily at the margins of dams, ponds, constructed wetlands and bio retention basins, where the stems slow and filter runoff and give frogs cover to breed in. It is one of the standard species for that sort of work in eastern Australia.
The catch is that it spreads by rhizome and will colonise a shallow shelf given the chance. In an ornamental pond, plant it into a submerged basket or a contained pocket rather than straight into the pond floor. Supplied in 130mm, so buy in numbers and plant a run along the margin rather than single specimens.
