Bird of Paradise - Strelitzia parvifolia
Not the giant white bird of paradise that outgrows every courtyard it is put in, and not quite the broad leaved orange one either. Strelitzia parvifolia sits between them, with much narrower leaf blades on long stems, leaning towards the reed like S. juncea while still carrying a proper blade.
Flowers are the familiar orange and blue crane heads, and the narrow foliage lets you actually see them instead of burying them. Clumps thicken slowly from the base into a stiff upright mass that holds its shape in wind, which is why it suits exposed coastal and poolside beds where a nicolai would shred to ribbons by the end of summer.
Two things worth knowing. It flowers better when the clump is crowded, so resist the urge to divide it every couple of years. And it is slow to settle after planting, particularly out of large containers, so a first season without flowers is not a failure. Sizes here run up to 300L for established clumps.
