Kurrajong - Brachychiton Bella Pink
Through summer, when most flowering trees have finished, this kurrajong hybrid hangs its branches with waxy bell shaped flowers in soft to deep pink. Being semi deciduous, it often drops a good deal of its foliage first, which makes the flowering far more visible than it would be on a fully leafy crown.
It is a more manageable tree than the Illawarra flame: moderate in growth, denser in habit, and better scaled to a front yard, a nature strip or a car park island. Full sun suits it, and once established it asks for very little water. The swollen trunk base the genus is known for develops with age.
Two warnings worth heeding. It is a grafted tree, so rub off any shoot appearing below the graft union promptly or the rootstock will take the plant over. And the woody boat shaped seed pods are lined with fine hairs that irritate skin and eyes, so gather them with gloves and keep them away from children.
