Calyptrocalyx polyphyllus
The name means many leaved, and that is the character of this one: numerous narrow leaflets ranked along each arching frond, producing a finer, more feathery crown than the broad leaved members of the genus. Calyptrocalyx palms come from the rainforest understorey of New Guinea and nearby islands, and collectors grow them for exactly this variation in leaf form, along with the coloured new growth that runs through the group.
The conditions are not flexible. Warmth, high humidity, deep shade to filtered light, wind protection, and a moist, open, freely draining mix. It will not take frost, cold draughts or drying out, and the fine leaflets show stress well before the rest of the plant does. In Australian terms that means a sheltered position in a tropical or warm subtropical garden, or a heated indoor or glasshouse pot further south. Give it somewhere it can stay, since it dislikes being shuffled between conditions. Available in 250mm from one farm.
