Japanese Camellia - Camellia japonica Brushfields Yellow
Nobody buys this one for a yellow flower in the daffodil sense. The bloom is an anemone form: a ring of broad white to cream guard petals around a tight dome of small creamy petaloids, and it is that packed centre, not the outer petals, carrying the colour. It is an old cultivar that has stayed in production because the flowers are clean, well shaped and hold together when floated in a bowl.
Like other japonicas it is slow, long lived and happiest in dappled shade with gentle morning light and shelter from western sun. Treat it as a shrub you shape lightly, not a hedge you shear; japonicas resent hard clipping in a way sasanquas simply do not.
The usual complaint is brown flowers hanging on the bush after rain, since spent japonica blooms do not always drop cleanly. Pick them off through the flowering flush if the plant sits somewhere prominent, and keep overhead watering off it while it is in bud.
Choosing a size
This plant is available in 6 sizes, from 70mm up to 150L, priced from $16.95 to $1259.00 per plant. The size shown is the pot the plant arrives in, which is the rootball, not the height of the plant. The smaller pots hold younger plants that cost less each and establish quickly, which suits hedges, screens and mass planting where the plant count adds up. The larger sizes carry several more years of growth on the farm and give height and presence straight away, which is what you want for a single feature position or a screen that cannot wait.
