Camellia Volunteer PBR
Part shade is not a polite suggestion with this one. Volunteer carries the glossy, dark evergreen leaves the camellia group is grown for, and those leaves bleach to a scorched tan if they cop hot afternoon sun off a western fence or a pale rendered wall. Give it morning light, shelter from midday on, and soil that is acidic, humus rich and free draining.
Slow to moderate growth means a 5lt plant takes a few seasons to knit into a hedge, so plant a little closer than you would a fast grower and be patient rather than hard pruning to force density. Water matters most through autumn while the buds are swelling; a dry run then shows up as buds that yellow and drop without ever opening.
Check the undersides of the leaves for scale insect and the sooty mould that follows it. In pots, use a camellia and azalea mix rather than a general potting mix, and never let the rootball dry right out.
