Upright Hornbeam - Carpinus betulus Fastigiata
The name suggests a permanent column, and that is not quite the story. Fastigiata hornbeam is genuinely narrow and egg-shaped while young, then broadens steadily with age into a solid oval crown. Plan for the mature width rather than the nursery shape, or the avenue you plant will close in on itself.
Foliage is where the tree earns its keep. The leaves are neatly pleated along the veins, fresh green in spring, turning yellow through gold in autumn. On trees clipped as a hedge or pleached screen much of the tan foliage hangs on through winter, so the screen still does something in the cold months. The trunk develops a smooth, muscular grey fluting.
It takes shearing better than beech and is the usual pick for formal hedges above head height through cooler parts of Victoria, the tablelands and the Adelaide Hills. It is not a warm humid climate tree. Give it a deep soil, keep water up over the first few summers, and it builds a dense frame quickly.
