For best results, unpack your plant promptly, water it well, and plant it as soon as practical.
Give your plant the best start after delivery.
- Unpack your plant promptly and check the soil moisture on arrival.
- Water deeply after planting to settle soil around the root zone.
- Keep soil evenly moist while the plant establishes, without leaving it waterlogged.
- Choose a planting position suited to the plant's light requirements.
- Add mulch around the base to help retain moisture and reduce weeds.
- Avoid piling mulch against the trunk or stem.
- For hedging or screening plants, trim lightly once established to encourage denser growth.
Care requirements vary by variety, climate, season, and planting location. Always match watering, sunlight, and soil conditions to the specific plant you are buying.

Cyphophoenix elegans
Cyphophoenix elegans is a solitary New Caledonian feather palm that builds a slim, cleanly ringed trunk topped by a neat crownshaft and a compact crown of arching fronds. Its defining quality is restraint: it stays in proportion to a wall, a pool surround or a courtyard for far longer than the common tropical feather palms, which is exactly why it is specified for built spaces. It is rarely offered, moves through nurseries in small numbers, and is listed here only at specimen sizes.
An island palm in a built courtyard
New Caledonia gives the brief: frost free, warm, humid, and never baked. In tropical and warm subtropical gardens it is straightforward, and further south it needs a genuinely sheltered courtyard microclimate rather than an optimistic corner of the lawn. Soil should hold moisture while still draining freely, with organic matter through it and a permanent mulch over the root zone, and a dry inland summer without irrigation will leave it looking poor. The failure mode is exposure while young. Handed an open position before it has trunk, the crown burns and browns in hot drying wind and reflected heat off paving and rendered walls, and a slow palm wears that damage for a long time. Give young plants overhead protection and a wind break, and let them earn an open position as they gain height. Where the site is a courtyard with walls on two or three sides, check that reflected heat off light coloured render is not turning it into an oven in February.
The courtyard scale alternative
The case for it is straightforward against bangalow palm, which is quicker and cheaper but will outgrow a small courtyard within a decade and then wants a lift to manage. Cyphophoenix stays in scale. Against cabada palm, the difference is habit: cabada clumps into a widening group of green ringed canes for screening, while this holds one clean trunk as a single focal point. Take Cyphophoenix when the space is finite and the palm has to still fit in fifteen years. It also holds up against the clumping options for a small courtyard. A clump keeps widening at the base and eventually has to be thinned or cut back, while one clean trunk with a crownshaft occupies the same footprint at year one and year twenty.
Little pruning, patient feeding
Remove fronds only once they are fully brown, cutting at the stalk base, and leave everything still holding green, because a slow palm cannot afford the reserves. Do it in the warm months. Feed in early spring and again in midsummer with a palm fertiliser containing potassium and magnesium, spread under the crown rather than at the trunk, and keep the rate moderate. Mulch deeply, pull it back off the trunk base, and check the root zone by hand through summer in built in planters where the soil volume is small. Similar specimen stock is listed in mature trees.
Choosing a size
This plant is available in 2 sizes, from 110L up to 160L, priced from $779.00 to $1319.00 per plant. The size shown is the pot the plant arrives in, which is the rootball, not the height of the plant. Every size here is established stock rather than a starter plant, so this line is intended for immediate effect rather than for growing on. Not sure which to choose?
