Pinks - Dianthus Memories
Growers who deal in scent rate the modern pinks highly, and Memories sits in that group: bred for perfume first and flower shape second. The clove note is strongest on warm still mornings and carries a surprising distance for such a small plant.
The plant itself is a low, tight mound of narrow grey blue evergreen foliage that holds its shape year round, with flower stems lifting clear of the cushion. It suits the front edge of a border, a rockery pocket, or a shallow trough where you can get close enough to smell it.
Two things kill pinks in Australian gardens: mulch piled against the crown, and heavy soil that stays wet. Plant slightly proud of the surrounding level, mulch with gravel rather than bark, and keep the base of the plant airy. Humid summer nights in the subtropics are harder on them than any amount of winter cold. Shear the whole plant over after each flush of bloom to bring on the next one.
