Hop Bush - Dodonaea viscosa Green
Hop bush earns its place in Australian gardens as a fast screen for hard sites. This green leaved form of Dodonaea viscosa is the straight native rather than the burgundy Purpurea, with narrow, slightly sticky evergreen leaves on an upright, twiggy frame.
The flowers are barely noticeable. What people actually plant it for are the papery winged seed capsules, the hops, which flush pink and red on female plants and hang on the bush for weeks.
It handles drought, poor gravelly soil, coastal wind and reflected heat about as well as anything you can buy. The trade off is longevity. It is not a hundred year shrub, and it goes woody and open in the middle if left to its own devices.
Tip prune from the day it goes in the ground, take a third off after it has finished seeding, and never cut back into bare old wood, because it reshoots poorly from there. In a 200mm pot it establishes quickly planted through autumn or spring.
