Silverberry - Elaeagnus ebbingei Balls
In exposed coastal and windy gardens where clipped buxus sulks, Elaeagnus ebbingei is the substitute that holds a shape. These are balls already formed on the farm, carrying leathery olive-green leaves that flip to a silvered, finely scaled underside whenever the wind moves them. New growth is speckled bronze and fades as it hardens off.
It takes salt, wind and hard shearing, and it stays dense right down to the base, which is why landscapers repeat it as feature balls along a path or in large pots either side of an entry. The small autumn flowers are easy to miss but carry a strong sweet scent, strongest towards evening.
Two things to watch. It will not tolerate soggy ground, so keep it off waterlogged clay and out of lawn hollows, and it throws long vigorous shoots that break the outline, so plan on trimming two or three times across the growing season rather than once a year. The 90L stock is heavy and needs two people or a machine on site.
