Bloodwood - Corymbia calophylla (Eucalyptus)
Across the jarrah country of Western Australia's southwest, marri is the big rough-barked tree with the oversized urn-shaped gumnuts that locals call honky nuts. Those nuts are the practical issue in a garden. They are heavy, they drop in quantity, and they will dent a car bonnet or roll an ankle on a path, so site the tree well away from parking, seating and mowing lines.
It is a fast growing evergreen for full sun that becomes genuinely large, with a broad shade canopy, tessellated grey-brown bark and heavy crops of cream flowers, sometimes pink tinged, that bring in lorikeets and bees. Once the roots are away it asks for very little water.
Do not confuse it with Corymbia ficifolia, the small red flowering gum it is often used as a rootstock for. Calophylla is a shade and shelter tree for acreage, parkland and wide verges, not a courtyard feature. Advanced 90lt and 35L stock is available with flat $99 delivery to QLD, NSW, VIC, SA, ACT and WA.
