Honey Locust - Gleditsia triacanthos var. Inermis Ruby Lace
Landscapers reach for Ruby Lace when a purple leaved tree is wanted but a purple leaf plum would sit too heavy and solid in the design. The new growth emerges deep ruby bronze and softens to bronze green as the leaflets harden, so the tree shifts colour through the season instead of holding one flat tone, and the fine pinnate foliage keeps the shade underneath light.
Habit is the thing to plan for. Ruby Lace is less upright and more wide spreading than the gold forms, and young trees tend to fork or lean, so stake to a single leader and do the formative pruning in the first few winters rather than trying to fix it later. Colour holds best out of hot, dry wind; on exposed inland sites the soft new growth can scorch at the margins. Thornless above the graft, though root suckers can come up armed and should be removed. Full sun, and it handles dry ground once the roots are down. Bare root and containerised stock up to 200 litres.
