Spider Flower - Grevillea Bonnie Prince Charlie
Most red-flowered grevillea hybrids sold in Australia trace back to a handful of the same parents, and telling them apart on a nursery bench is close to impossible. Bonnie Prince Charlie is the low, wide-spreading one: fine grey-green divided foliage on lax stems, with pendulous red spider flowers appearing through the cooler months and returning in flushes at other times. Honeyeaters work it hard. It suits the front of a native bed, the top of a retaining wall, or a bank where you want cover without height.
Two things kill it. The first is phosphorus, so keep ordinary rose and citrus fertilisers well away and use a native blend or nothing at all. The second is wet feet in heavy clay, which is why it is far happier on a raised or gravelly bed than in compacted new-estate soil. Tip prune lightly after each flush; cutting back into bare old wood usually will not reshoot. Full sun keeps it dense, and once the roots are down it asks for very little water.
