River Red Gum - Eucalyptus camaldulensis [Wildwood]
Before ordering this one, measure the space honestly. River red gum is the biggest and longest lived tree most Australian sites will ever carry, with a broad open crown, a massive lower trunk and smooth bark shedding in grey, cream and salmon patches. Mature trees drop limbs without warning in hot still weather, which is why arborists keep them well away from houses, sheds, pools and parking.
Where there is room, nothing else does the same job. It is the tree of inland watercourses and floodplains, comfortable with periodic inundation and long dry spells alike, and it forms hollows for wildlife faster than almost any other eucalypt.
The Wildwood seed source is a Victorian provenance, useful on farm plantings and revegetation work north west of Melbourne where local genetics are part of the specification. Plant in full sun on open ground, water through the first two summers, then leave it alone. Fertiliser and irrigation only make it grow soft wood.
