Crimson Mallee - Eucalyptus lansdowneana ssp albopurpurea
Autumn and winter are when crimson mallee earns its place. Flowers open through the cooler months in shades running from white through pink to deep purple-red, which is what the subspecies name albopurpurea records, and they arrive when little else native is out. Honeyeaters find it quickly.
This is a South Australian plant from the Eyre Peninsula and Kangaroo Island, growing as a mallee or small tree with several smooth-barked stems, narrow glossy green leaves and an open crown. It stays manageable in size, which is both unusual and useful in a genus known for outgrowing its position.
Grow it in full sun with genuinely free drainage. It handles alkaline and limy soils better than most eucalypts, and it copes with coastal wind. One thing to know before you buy: seed-raised plants vary in flower colour, so if a particular shade matters, choose a named selection instead.
