Crimson Mallee - Eucalyptus lansdowneana ssp albopurpurea Purple Patch
Grown from ordinary seed, crimson mallee throws everything from near white to washed-out pink, and buyers hoping for deep colour are often let down. Purple Patch answers that. It is a selection of subspecies albopurpurea chosen for rich purple to crimson flowers, opening through autumn and winter on a compact South Australian mallee.
Habit follows the type: several smooth grey stems from a lignotuber, narrow glossy leaves, and an open crown small enough for a front garden or a wide nature strip. Nectar birds work it hard while it is in flower, and the woody fruit that follow have a quiet appeal of their own.
Culture is straightforward in the right climate. Full sun, sharp drainage, tolerance of lime and salt-laden wind, and no need for rich soil or feeding. In summer-humid districts it is much less reliable, so raise the planting position and keep irrigation away from the base. Prune only to shape while the stems are still young.
