Yellow Gum - Eucalyptus leucoxylon subsp. megalocarpa
Plenty of buyers arrive here looking for the pink-flowered yellow gum they have seen on a nature strip and do not realise megalocarpa is a different animal. This subspecies is shorter and broader than the type, often forking low into a spreading, sometimes multi-stemmed tree, and it carries much larger buds and gumnuts, big woody bells you notice underfoot.
Bark is smooth cream to yellow-grey over most of the trunk, shedding in patches to leave blue-grey and fawn behind, usually with a short rough sock at the base. Flowers hang in threes and honeyeaters work them hard. Colour is the thing to watch: seedling stock ranges from cream through pink to deep red, so if a client has been promised red, buy it in flower or accept the variation.
It copes with limestone, alkaline soils, coastal exposure and dry summers, which is why it does so much work in South Australian and western Victorian plantings. Full sun, low water once it is away.
Choosing a size
This plant is available in 11 sizes, from 140mm up to 500mm, priced from $16.95 to $479.00 per plant. The size shown is the pot the plant arrives in, which is the rootball, not the height of the plant. The smaller pots hold younger plants that cost less each and establish quickly, which suits hedges, screens and mass planting where the plant count adds up. The larger sizes carry several more years of growth on the farm and give height and presence straight away, which is what you want for a single feature position or a screen that cannot wait.
