Yellow Gum - Eucalyptus leucoxylon subsp. pruinosa
Pruinosa means frosted, and that is the whole point of this subspecies. Young stems, buds and juvenile leaves carry a waxy blue white bloom that sets it apart from the greener leucoxylon forms most people know, and the effect is strongest on vigorous new growth.
It comes from the drier inland of South Australia and western Victoria, so it stays a smaller and often more crooked tree than its southern relatives, with an open evergreen canopy and smooth pale bark peeling above a rough base. Flowers are the usual creamy white to pink of the group, carried in threes and worked hard by honeyeaters.
Use it where you want blue tones in a dry native planting, in a low windbreak, or for shade on light alkaline ground. Two things spoil it: rich soil with regular water, which pushes soft green growth and washes out the bloom, and shade, which thins the crown badly. Full sun and a degree of neglect suit it far better.
