Mottlecah - Eucalyptus macrocarpa ssp. macrocarpa
Sprawling rather than upright, Mottlecah is the eucalypt people photograph and then struggle to grow. Its stem clasping leaves are large, silver grey and thickly waxy, held on angular branches that lean out from the base, and the flowers are the largest in the genus: deep red brushes the size of a fist, followed by heavy woody gumnuts.
It comes from deep sandy soils in Western Australia with dry summers, and that is the whole story of its cultivation. Humidity, summer rain and heavy ground kill it, usually through root rot, so east of the ranges it wants a raised bed of coarse sand or gravel, full sun, sharp drainage and almost no irrigation once away. Grafted plants perform far better in higher rainfall districts than seedlings do.
Grow it for the flowers and the foliage, give it room to lean, and resist the urge to feed and water it.
