Swamp Gum - Eucalyptus ovata
Few eucalypts tolerate wet feet, which is exactly why Swamp Gum earns its place. Eucalyptus ovata sits naturally in poorly drained flats, swamp margins and seasonally waterlogged gullies through Victoria, southern New South Wales and South Australia, so it will handle ground that drowns other trees over winter while still coping when the same site bakes dry in February.
Expect a medium sized evergreen with glossy dark green egg shaped adult leaves, a rounded spreading crown, and bark that sheds in ribbons to smooth grey and white above a short rough stocking. White flowers come through the cooler months.

- Shade and shelter on heavy clay where drainage cannot be fixed
It is easily confused with the closely related E. camphora, so buy labelled stock if the planting is being audited.
Choosing a size
This plant is available in 5 sizes, from 140mm up to 400mm, priced from $16.95 to $249.00 per plant. The size shown is the pot the plant arrives in, which is the rootball, not the height of the plant. The smaller pots hold younger plants that cost less each and establish quickly, which suits hedges, screens and mass planting where the plant count adds up. The larger sizes carry several more years of growth on the farm and give height and presence straight away, which is what you want for a single feature position or a screen that cannot wait.
