Gum Tree - Eucalyptus pleurocarpa
Grown as much for the cut foliage trade as for gardens, Tallerack is the white waxy mallee from southern Western Australia that older references still list as Eucalyptus tetragona. Everything above ground carries a chalky bloom: square stems, big stiff opposite grey white leaves, angular buds and squat four sided gumnuts. The cream flowers sit in the leaf axils and are almost incidental next to the foliage.
It stays a large shrub to small multi stemmed tree with an open, rather architectural frame, and it is best used as a feature in gravel gardens, dry native beds and loose informal screens where that colour can carry a planting on its own.
Drainage makes or breaks it. Wet feet, humid summers and heavy clay finish it quickly, and overhead watering marks the wax. Plant it high, mulch with gravel rather than compost, and take stems for the vase instead of pruning for shape.

The size shown is the pot the plant arrives in, which is the rootball, not the height of the plant.
