Gum Tree - Eucalyptus radiata
Crush a leaf and you have the identification. Narrow-leaved Peppermint carries fine, narrow, willowy foliage with a clean peppermint scent, quite different from the medicinal smell of the blue gums, and it is the source of the eucalyptus radiata oil sold for its softer aroma.
The tree makes a medium sized evergreen with a fine textured, slightly weeping crown and finely fibrous grey bark running out to the small limbs. It belongs to the cooler, moister forests of Victoria and southern New South Wales and does best where summers are not brutal and the soil holds a little moisture. On hot dry inland sites it disappoints.
Use it for shelterbelts, habitat plantings and screening on acreage. It is a known koala browse species, and the fine foliage filters wind better than the coarse leaved gums do. Available in 300mm through to 420mm advanced stock across our grower farms.
