Gum Tree - Eucalyptus regnans
This is the tallest flowering plant on earth, and it is worth being honest about what that means for a planting plan. Mountain Ash belongs on cool, wet, deep soiled sites in the mountain country of Victoria and Tasmania, where it grows into an enormously tall, straight stemmed forest tree with a long clean bole, ribbons of shed bark hanging from the upper trunk, and a high crown of glossy green leaves.
Put it anywhere hot, dry, exposed or shallow soiled and it simply will not perform, so treat it as a forest and gully tree rather than a substitute for a paddock gum. On the right site it needs space measured in tens of metres, well clear of houses, and an understorey to keep the root zone cool and damp.
One trait sets it apart from most eucalypts: it does not resprout after severe fire and regenerates from seed instead, which matters if you are planning firewise revegetation.
Choosing a size
This plant is available in 3 sizes, from 200mm up to 400mm, priced from $30.95 to $199.00 per plant. The size shown is the pot the plant arrives in, which is the rootball, not the height of the plant. The smaller pots hold younger plants that cost less each and establish quickly, which suits hedges, screens and mass planting where the plant count adds up. The larger sizes carry several more years of growth on the farm and give height and presence straight away, which is what you want for a single feature position or a screen that cannot wait.
