Hazelnut - Wanliss Pride Corylus avellana
Hazelnuts are wind pollinated and largely self incompatible, so the first thing to sort out with Wanliss Pride is a partner. Plant at least one other variety nearby whose catkins release at an overlapping time, or you will end up with a handsome deciduous shrub and very few nuts. Wanliss Pride is an Australian raised selection of Corylus avellana grown for kernel quality.
The habit is multi stemmed and suckering unless you train it up, with broad, softly hairy, toothed leaves that turn butter yellow before dropping. Catkins hang through the coldest months and are worth having in their own right.
It needs winter chill, which limits it to cooler districts: the Adelaide Hills, central and western Victoria, the tablelands and the ranges rather than anywhere subtropical. Give it deep, moist, well drained soil, keep water up through nut fill in summer, and either net the crop or accept that cockatoos and rats will take a share. Remove suckers each year if you want a single trunk.
