Coral Bells - Heuchera Berry Smoothie
Berry Smoothie is grown for leaf colour that keeps moving: rose purple while the weather is cool, shifting towards lighter caramel and smoky pink over silver as it warms, on large ruffled leaves in a rounded mound. Wiry stems lift small pale flowers above the clump in the warm months, but nobody buys a heuchera for the flowers.
It belongs to the larger, villosa influenced group, which matters in Australia because those hold up far better through heat and humidity than the daintier older hybrids that melt away in a Sydney February.
Use it as a ribbon along the front of a part shaded border, in mixed pots with ferns, or under deciduous trees. Morning sun with afternoon shade gives the best colour without scorching, while deep shade dulls it off.
Two failures to avoid: planting the crown too deep, which rots it, and heavy clay that stays wet all winter. Lift and replant when the woody crown starts pushing itself out of the ground.
