Panicle Hydrangea - Hydrangea paniculata Hercules
There is a point where a hydrangea head gets heavy enough to pull its own stem over, and the large-panicled paniculata selections sit close to it. Hercules is grown for size of bloom, so give it a sheltered position, go easy with nitrogen, and cut it back to a low framework in late winter. Hard annual pruning builds thicker stems, not weaker ones.
The heads are conical rather than rounded and shift tone as they age, which is normal ripening and not a sign of stress. For the vase, cut once the florets have firmed up. Cut too early and they wilt in water; leave them and they dry on the bush, which is a legitimate way to use them.
Deciduous, happiest in part shade, and reliant on consistent moisture through summer. Rain sitting in a full panicle is what usually causes the flop, so plant where a fence or larger shrub takes some weather off it. Mulch well and keep the root zone cool.
