Australian Indigo - Indigofera australis
Airy rather than dense, Australian Indigo grows as an open shrub of arching stems clothed in soft blue-green pinnate leaves, and that lightness is precisely its value. It fills the middle layer beneath gums without blocking light or sightlines, which is the job it does naturally in dry sclerophyll forest across much of the country.
Sprays of small mauve to rose pea flowers run along the stems from the cooler months into spring, and native bees work them heavily. Despite the common name it is not the commercial dye species, though the genus carries that history.
It is a legume and it wants what legumes want: sharp drainage, lighter soil, and no phosphorus-rich fertiliser. Heavy wet clay is what kills most of them. Plants left alone go leggy and shorten their lives, so cut back reasonably hard after flowering to rebuild a low framework; it takes coppicing well. Useful in native plantings, dry shade under established trees, and revegetation work.
