Crepe Myrtle - Lagerstroemia fauriei Fantasy
Most crepe myrtles are planted for the flower. This one is worth planting for the trunk. Old bark flakes away in sheets to leave a smooth cinnamon to mahogany surface underneath, and because the tree is deciduous, that trunk is on show right through winter when the garden has little else going on.
Lagerstroemia fauriei is taller and more upright than the common indica types, with a vase-shaped crown that lifts cleanly for a street tree or a driveway avenue. Flowers come as loose white panicles through summer, followed by orange and red autumn tones. It also carries real resistance to powdery mildew, the fault that spoils so many older crepe myrtles in humid gardens.
Full sun, low to moderate water, moderate growth. Prune only to lift the canopy and take out crossing wood. The hard heading cuts that crepe myrtles are so often given destroy the smooth branch structure and the bark character that are the reason for choosing this one.
