Crepe Myrtle - Lagerstroemia Indian Summer
Indian Summer is a range, not a single cultivar. The name covers the group of mildew resistant Lagerstroemia indica crossed with fauriei hybrids grown in Australia, which includes selections such as Natchez, Tuscarora, Sioux and Biloxi, each with its own flower colour, mature size and bark tone. At 300 litres you are buying one grown specimen, so confirm which selection is actually in stock before you build a colour scheme around it.
What the whole range shares is worth having: long summer flowering in crinkled panicles, smooth exfoliating bark that keeps working through winter once the trunk is old enough to shed, orange and red autumn colour, and far less of the grey mildew that plagued the older seedling crepe myrtles. They flower on new wood, so a light winter thin is all that is needed; hard heading back only produces whippy shoots and heavy flower heads that fold over in summer rain.
