Crepe Myrtle - Lagerstroemia Moonlight Magic
Few crepe myrtles carry dark foliage, and that is the whole reason this one exists. Moonlight Magic pushes new growth in a deep purple-black that holds through the warm months, then sets clean white flower panicles against it, a far sharper contrast than the usual green leaf and pink flower combination.
It belongs to the Magic series, bred for compact frames and coloured leaves, so it suits smaller gardens, courtyard features, large pots and narrow verges rather than big avenue work. Deciduous, moderate in growth, and content with low to moderate water once established.
Full sun is not negotiable. In part shade the leaves drift back toward green and flowering thins out, which is the most common complaint about dark-leaved crepe myrtles. White flowers also brown off after heavy summer rain, so put it where you will not be staring at spent panicles from the kitchen window. Autumn colour follows before leaf fall.
