Yellow Latan Palm - Latania verschaffeltii
Sister species to the red latan, and the yellow one. Latania verschaffeltii comes from Rodrigues in the Indian Ocean, and young plants carry butter yellow to orange colouring along the petioles, ribs and veins of stiff pleated fan leaves. As with the whole genus, that colour is a juvenile feature and softens as the palm builds a trunk and matures into a grey-green crown.
Culture is straightforward in warm climates: full sun, free-draining soil, tolerance of salt spray and coastal wind, and no frost. Growth is slow, so a 90L plant represents years in the ground and deserves siting as a single specimen with room around it, in a lawn, a driveway circle or an open coastal garden.
Worth knowing that the three Latania species are frequently mislabelled in the trade and will hybridise where they grow together. Juvenile petiole colour is the most reliable way to tell what you have actually got.
