Bay Tree - Laurus Flavour Master
Plant this one within reach of the kitchen door. Flavour Master is a selected bay laurel grown for culinary leaf quality and for a denser, more uniform habit than run-of-the-mill seedling bay, which matters if you also intend to clip it.
The leaves are leathery, dark and aromatic, and the plant is evergreen and takes shearing well, so it works as a clipped hedge, a pair of standards flanking an entry, a cone or ball in a pot, or simply a shrub in the herb garden that you pick from as you cook.
Watch for bay sucker, a psyllid that thickens, curls and yellows the leaf margins in spring; pick off affected tips as they appear. In still, shaded positions scale and the sooty mould that follows it are the other regular problem, so allow airflow. Potted bays exhaust their mix and yellow off, so feed and repot on a cycle.
