Coast Sword Sedge - Lepidosperma gladiatum
On the sand dunes of southern Australia, from the WA south coast around through SA and Victoria, this sedge is one of the plants doing the actual work of holding sand in place. Lepidosperma gladiatum makes stiff, flat, sword-shaped leaves in a hard evergreen clump and spreads steadily by thick underground rhizomes, taking salt spray, wind, raw sand and long dry spells without complaint.
That toughness comes with a caution. It is a spreader rather than a neat tussock. In a small suburban bed it keeps pushing outward from the rhizomes and it is difficult to remove once settled, so use it where you actually want ground held: dune restoration, coastal batters, road verges, drainage swales and large native mass plantings.
The leaf edges are sharp and the blades stiff enough to cut a hand, so keep it well clear of paths, play areas and driveway corners.
Once established it needs no watering, no feeding and no trimming beyond pulling out dead leaf occasionally.

This plant is available in 3 sizes, from 130mm up to 200mm, priced from $16.95 to $32.95 per plant. The size shown is the pot the plant arrives in, which is the rootball, not the height of the plant.
