Brush Cherry - Syzygium australe Select (Eugenia australis)
When a boundary needs sixty plants rather than six, Select is usually the brush cherry that gets specified. It is the straight grown form of the species rather than one of the resistance bred named clones, and it does the plain work of a screen well: upright, densely branched, glossy green, with a red bronze flush on every new cycle of growth.
Unclipped it keeps rising well past fence height and can be run as a narrow screening tree between properties. Clipped, it holds any line from waist height upwards and recovers quickly from a hard cut. Small white flowers are followed by pink fruit that birds take.
Because it is not one of the psyllid resistant selections, expect some pimpling on new growth in humid weather. Keeping plants fed and watered so they flush strongly, then shearing off affected tips, keeps that cosmetic rather than serious. This plant is available in 9 sizes, from 140mm up to 100L, priced from $16.95 to $649.00 per plant. The size shown is the pot the plant arrives in, which is the rootball, not the height of the plant. The smaller pots hold younger plants that cost less each and establish quickly, which suits hedges, screens and mass planting where the plant count adds up. The larger sizes carry several more years of growth on the farm and give height and presence straight away, which is what you want for a single feature position or a screen that cannot wait.
