Lilly Pilly - Syzygium Big Red PBR (Acmena)
Buy this one for the new growth. Big Red flushes a deep, sustained red that holds far longer than the brief bronze tips of older lilly pilly lines, and because a hedge pushes fresh growth every time you clip it, a regularly trimmed run can carry colour through much of the year. Foliage matures to glossy dark green and the plant is dense from low down, which is what you actually need in a screen.
Selections of this type were bred with psyllid resistance in mind, so the pimpled, puckered leaves that ruin an old lilly pilly hedge are far less of a problem. They are not immune, and hungry, stressed plants always cop it worst. Older plans may still list plants of this group under Acmena.
Keep water and a complete fertiliser up through the first two summers; hunger shows first as pale leaves and a thin base. This is the 90 litre grade, so it goes in as an instant screen rather than something you wait five years for.
