Sweet Gum - Liquidambar styraciflua Palo Alto
Warm and coastal gardens are where liquidambar autumn colour most often disappoints, sliding to a tired yellow brown before drop. Palo Alto came out of California with a reputation for colouring strongly where winters are milder, running to bright orange and red rather than the burgundy end of the range.
In every other respect it behaves like the species. Fast growth, upright while young and spreading with age, with big lobed star shaped leaves that shade a lawn properly through summer and let the winter sun back in once they fall. Full sun, moderate water and reasonable soil depth are what it asks for. Give it distance from services and paving. The shallow spreading root system is the standard complaint against sweet gums and it is not tamed by a root barrier alone once the tree is large. The seed balls drop hard and spiky, so keep it off the pool deck. Currently offered here in a single advanced size.
