Magnolia Burgundy Star
What makes Burgundy Star useful in a small garden is its shape as much as its flower. It grows markedly upright and narrow rather than spreading, which suits a driveway edge, a side boundary or any spot where a wide-crowned magnolia would eventually need butchering. The flowers are deep wine to burgundy, tulip-shaped and held upright, opening on bare wood before the leaves appear so the whole outline of the tree carries colour.
Being deciduous, it puts on the show first and the foliage later, then drops in autumn and lets winter sun through. Give it a sheltered aspect. Magnolia buds and open flowers are easily browned by a late frost or a hard wind, and the display is over quickly once they are damaged.
The roots are shallow and fleshy, so mulch rather than cultivate around the base, keep grass off the root zone, and do not let it dry out through its first few summers. Prune only to remove damage, and do it straight after flowering.
