Magnolia Butterflies
This is not one of the cream magnolias sold as yellow. Butterflies opens a genuine canary to butter yellow, the strongest colour among the yellow hybrids, from a cross between the American cucumber tree and the Chinese Yulan magnolia made by Phil Savage in Michigan.
The flowers are goblet shaped and appear on bare wood as the buds break, so there is a short overlap of flower and unfurling leaf. Yellow magnolias open later in the season than the purple ones, which is worth knowing in frost districts because it often takes them past the worst of it.
Climate does affect the colour. In cool districts the yellow holds; in warm coastal and subtropical gardens it washes out toward cream and flowering is lighter. Growth is upright and pyramidal when young, broadening later, and it takes a few seasons before the flower count gets heavy. Deep mulch, no cultivation over the roots, and steady moisture through summer.
