Evergreen Magnolia - Magnolia grandiflora Greenback
Along a boundary row, or trained flat against a wall, the habit here stays denser and more compact than seedling grandiflora, which is why it holds up as a clipped screen or a pleached wall instead of drifting into an open tree. The leaf earns its keep as much as the flower: deep glossy green on the upper surface, with a thick rust brown felt on the reverse that shows every time wind turns the canopy over.
Cream flowers with a lemon scent open through the warmer months, a few at a time rather than all at once. Growth is slow to moderate, so the size you buy is close to the size you will live with for a while, and it pays to start with an advanced container where the screen is needed now.
It takes full sun through to part shade on moderate water. The thing to plan for is leaf drop: the old leaves are stiff, slow to break down and awkward over pool coping or fine gravel. Keep it to garden beds, boundary rows and hedge lines with mulch underneath.
