Evergreen Magnolia - Magnolia grandiflora Super Gem
Landscapers already using Little Gem will find Super Gem the tighter and shorter jointed of the two, with a dark glossy leaf and a strong rusty brown felt underneath that shows every time the wind turns the foliage. It holds density lower down the plant, which is what justifies the extra outlay on a pleached screen.
Large cream flowers with a lemon scent come through the warm months, opening a few at a time rather than all at once, so treat it as a long slow season of bloom rather than one display.
Growth is slow to moderate, so buy the size you actually need instead of waiting on it. Usual jobs are pleached boundary panels, formal driveway lines, tall narrow hedges and large pots.
Soil is where it gets tripped up. It sulks in waterlogged ground and yellows in limey alkaline soils, and the thick leathery leaf litter is slow to break down and will block a pool skimmer.

This plant is available in 8 sizes, from 200mm up to 200L, priced from $60.95 to $1319.00 per plant. The size shown is the pot the plant arrives in, which is the rootball, not the height of the plant. The smaller pots hold younger plants that cost less each and establish quickly, which suits hedges, screens and mass planting where the plant count adds up. The larger sizes carry several more years of growth on the farm and give height and presence straight away, which is what you want for a single feature position or a screen that cannot wait.
