Evergreen Magnolia - Magnolia grandiflora Sweet Carolina
Most evergreen magnolia jobs in Australian gardens are screening jobs, and Sweet Carolina is grown for exactly that. It is a compact grandiflora selection with smaller leaves and shorter internodes than the species, so the canopy knits into a solid green wall instead of an open, gappy tree.
Leaves are glossy dark green above with the classic cinnamon brown felt underneath, and they hold that felt well, which matters if you are pleaching or clipping and the undersides show. Flowers are the big creamy white bowls with a lemon scent, opening through the warmer months in succession rather than all at once.
Worth knowing before you specify it: leaf drop is constant rather than seasonal, and grandiflora leaves are leathery and slow to break down, so they do not disappear into a lawn.
